1980年に日本人として初めてエリザベート王妃国際音楽コンクールで優勝を飾った堀米ゆず子は、その40周年を迎えた2020年11月に東京・サントリーホールに於いてJ.S.バッハの無伴奏リサイタルを開催。音楽の友に於いては「当夜の堀米の演奏は、演奏もさることながら非常な演奏環境とも相まって、言霊ならぬ音霊さえ宿っているような深遠さが余韻に残った」と評されるなど絶賛を博した。

5歳からヴァイオリンを久保田良作氏のもとで始め、1975年より江藤俊哉氏に師事。1980年桐朋学園大学卒業。同年エリザベート王妃国際音楽コンクールで日本人初の優勝を飾る。以来ベルリン・フィル、ロンドン響、シカゴ響、クラウディオ・アバド、小澤征爾、サイモン・ラトルなど世界一流のオーケストラ、指揮者との共演を重ねている。

世界中の音楽祭に数多く招かれ、その中にはアメリカのマールボロ音楽祭、クレーメルの主宰するロッケンハウス音楽祭、ルガーノアルゲリッチ音楽祭（スイス）、ハンブルクアルゲリッチ音楽祭（ドイツ）、フランダース音楽祭（ベルギー）などがある。室内楽にも熱心に取り組んでおり、これまでにルドルフ・ゼルキン、アルゲリッチ、ルイサダ、クレーメル、マイスキー、今井信子、メネセス、ナイディック等、多くのトップアーティスト達と共演している。

2011年東日本大震災に対し、微力ながら手助けになる事を願って、ブリュッセルに於いて「復興コンサート」を震災翌年から10年間行なった。

イタリアのカメラータピチュナ、イギリスのケンブリッジでマスタークラスを開催した。2018年からフランスのエクサンプロヴァンス、2020年からイタリアのブレシアでマスタークラスを開催している。2024年には、東京大学先端科学技術研究センター（先端研）主催「高野山会議」内で高野山金剛峯寺にて行われるコンサートシリーズmeetsに出演。2025年から先端研と社団法人社会的価値共創フォーラムが共催する〈円融の集い場〉に参加し、普通科・芸術科の枠を超えた青少年育成プログラムを受け持つ。

これまで後進の指導にも力を注いできており2024年までベルギーのブリュッセル王立音楽院教授、2025年春までオランダのマーストリヒト音楽院教授を務めた。

日本では、「モーツァルト：ヴァイオリン・ソナタ選集」「ベートーヴェン：ヴァイオリン・ソナタ全曲演奏」「J.S.バッハ/ブラームスプロジェクト全6回」など多くのプロジェクトに取り組み、2016年秋には、シェレンベルガー指揮カメラータ・ザルツブルクとともに、モーツァルトのヴァイオリン協奏曲全曲を一夜で演奏する公演を東京で開催し、絶賛を博した。

レコーディング活動も活発で、オクタヴィア・レコードより「J.S.バッハ：無伴奏ヴァイオリン・ソナタ＆パルティータ全曲集」に続き、最新版となる「ブルッフ＆ブラームス」（協奏曲）を2017年1月にリリース。その他には、ニース響とのラロ：ヴァイオリン協奏曲集、シャンドール・ヴェーグ指揮カメラータ・ザルツブルグとのモーツァルト：ヴァイオリン協奏曲集、ブラームス：ヴァイオリン・ソナタ集などがある。

エリザベート、インデイアナポリス、モントリオール、テイボール・ヴァルガなど多くの国際コンクールの審査委員にも招かれており、2016年5月より仙台国際音楽コンクールヴァイオリン部門審査委員長に就任。2015年7月には、春秋社より著書「ヴァイオリニストの領分」を刊行。

Yuzuko Horigome became the first Japanese violinist to win the prestigious Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition in 1980. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of this landmark achievement, she gave a solo recital of J.S. Bach’s unaccompanied works in November 2020 at Suntory Hall in Tokyo. The performance was met with great acclaim, with Ongaku no Tomo magazine stating, “The depth of Horigome’s performance that evening, enhanced by the extraordinary concert setting, lingered with a resonance that seemed to embody not only the soul of words but of sound itself.”

She began studying the violin at age five with Ryosaku Kubota and later studied under Toshiya Eto from 1975. She graduated from Toho Gakuen School of Music in 1980, the same year she won the Queen Elisabeth Competition. Since then, she has performed with many of the world’s top orchestras—including the Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, and Chicago Symphony Orchestra—and collaborated with leading conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Seiji Ozawa, and Sir Simon Rattle.

Horigome has been invited to numerous international music festivals, including the Marlboro Music Festival (USA), the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival led by Gidon Kremer, the Argerich Festival in Lugano (Switzerland) and Hamburg (Germany), and the Flanders Festival (Belgium). A passionate chamber musician, she has collaborated with renowned artists such as Rudolf Serkin, Martha Argerich, Jean-Marc Luisada, Gidon Kremer, Mischa Maisky, Nobuko Imai, Antonio Meneses, and Charles Neidich.

Following the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, she initiated a “Reconstruction Concert” series in Brussels, which she continued annually for ten years beginning the year after the disaster, hoping in her own way to contribute to the recovery efforts.

She has also been actively involved in education, conducting masterclasses at Camerata Picena in Italy and in Cambridge, UK. Since 2018, she has led masterclasses in Aix-en-Provence (France), and since 2020, in Brescia (Italy). In 2024, she performed in the meets concert series held at Kongobu-ji Temple on Mount Koya, as part of the “Koyasan Conference” organized by the University of Tokyo’s Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology (RCAST). From 2025, she will participate in the program En'yū no Tsudoi-ba (Place of Harmonious Confluence), jointly organized by RCAST and the Forum for Social Value Creation, where she will be involved in youth education programs that transcend the boundaries between general and arts-based education.

Horigome has long dedicated herself to the development of young musicians. She served as a professor at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels until 2024 and at the Conservatorium Maastricht in the Netherlands until spring 2025.

In Japan, she has undertaken numerous artistic projects including Selected Mozart Violin Sonatas, Complete Beethoven Violin Sonatas, and the six-part J.S. Bach/Brahms Project. In the autumn of 2016, she presented a highly acclaimed one-night performance in Tokyo of all of Mozart’s violin concertos with Camerata Salzburg conducted by Hansjörg Schellenberger.

Her recording activities are equally active. Following her complete recording of J.S. Bach: Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin on Octavia Records, she released her latest album Bruch & Brahms (Concertos) in January 2017. Other recordings include Lalo: Violin Concertos with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice, Mozart Violin Concertos with Camerata Salzburg under Sándor Végh, and Brahms: Violin Sonatas.

She has been invited to serve on the juries of many major international competitions including the Queen Elisabeth in Brussels, Indianapolis, Montreal, and Tibor Varga competitions. Since May 2016, she has served as Chair of the Violin Jury at the Sendai International Music Competition. In July 2015, she published her book The Violinist’s Domain (Viorinisuto no Ryōbun) through Shunjusha Publishing.
